As a result of COVID-19, we've all seen how quickly life as we know it can change. Our government is determining which jobs are essential and some states have gone as far as to saying what items are essential for us to buy at stores whose shelves are often bare as a result of people panic buying. As a result, many people have turned to food pantries and food banks to meet their basic food needs.
The problem with this is, food pantries and food banks were NEVER meant to serve the community as a day to day food supplier. However, research suggest that after the Great Recession of 2008 people not only visited food pantries for emergency and temporary food needs, they are visiting pantries as a part of their households’ long-term plan to feed their families due to financial difficulties. Sadly, the elderly were among the ones who most frequently visited the pantries. Food pantries and and food banks are struggling to keep up with the demand and donations are running dry.
Now ask yourself, if you had no pantry to fall back on, how long would you be able to feed your family? Now more than ever is the time to lessen our dependence on our jobs, corporate grocers, food pantries and food banks, and the government to feed us. Now is the time to learn to grow, can, preserve, and prepare your own food and Veggie Soul's Garden Club is ready to teach you how to live a self-sufficient life!
